“When Women Were Furniture” - How Three Female Botanists and Botanical Illustrators Defined the Odds. A presentation and discussion by artist and educator Binta Colley

Thursday, March 14, 2019

The T. W. Wood Gallery, at 46 Barre St. Montpelier, Vermont in the Center for Arts and Learning, is pleased to announce a presentation and discussion with artist and educator Binta Colley. “When Women Were Furniture” explores the position of women in science between the 1600’s - 1800’s. Colley’s talk highlights a study of Mary Delaney, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Jeanne Baret; three female botanists/botanical illustrators who contributed to the field through their art, science and exploration of the flora and fauna of their time. These women defied the odds and were key in building the foundation of botanical and scientific illustration, despite social barriers placed in their paths. Binta Colley had an exhibit this year that featured her botanical drawings and illustrations at Northern Vermont University. Colley recently completed a certificate in botanical illustration at The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx.
