  2. Thomas Waterman Wood - The Master Copies

    November 3, 2018, 12:00 PM - June 1, 2019, 4:00 PM

The T.W. Wood Gallery announces an exhibit of Thomas Waterman Wood’s Master Copies. Wood painted portraits across the US and Canada which lead to a European trip in 1858. Following fashion, Wood copied paintings in Europe to learn from the masters; such as Rembrandt and Turner. Wood made three additional trips and brought these paintings back to Vermont. In 19th Century Montpelier, these paintings were akin to an art history textbook, as many Americans wouldn’t have had access to European paintings. We invite you to visit the gallery, see these paintings’ scope, and explore how they differ from the originals.
